driver questions (sound and video)

Ok here goes. I just switched over to Linux after Windows miraculiously DIED on me in the middle of a good round of Counter Strike. I was fed up with Windows, and already had the Fedora Core 3 Install DVD. I am going to get Cedega so I can run my games, but before I do i need WORKING video and sound. I have a Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 64 MB and a Dell 19" Monitor I think at 60 Hz. I have done the first part, installing the driver itself, but now i need to update my X config files and I have no idea what to do. I just need a step by step tutorial (the readme doesn't help much) for updating all of the X config files. Next, I have my cheapo Sound Blaster Live! 24 bit 7.1 sound card, and I cannot find any Linux drivers for it. I also don't have the sound card to dvd drive wire so no help there. I am a linux noob, so all help would be appreciated, specifically very detailed help. Thanks. I am deprived of my games for the moment, so

Oh and no, Linux doesn't detect my sound card.

The README, while including an incredible amount of detail on just about every aspect of using the NVidia kernal module, does contain simple instructions on configuring xorg. Chapter 3 is what you need.

P.S. I still need help with sound.

Well, thats what I need ... probably, but I don't understand the commands that well, would someone please help, or someone with a nvidia geforce 4 MX 64 MB AGP please upload their xorg config and log files, because, as I said, I am a linux noob and I need all the help I can get.

also, in volume control it says no mixer elements and/or devices found.

I don't know much about how Fedora Core configurations... but:

1) Alsa (the Linux sound architecture) does support your card (1.0.6 or newer)
2) Assuming you're using a recent version of Alsa, according to the Alsa website (3rd from bottom), you need to load the snd-ca0106 module.

Someone more knowledgeable about Fedora Core can probably point you in the right direction into how to set up your card under that distribution.

Thanks that gets me close to having a working sound card. Now just to follow the directions for the code............

Wait... I don't even know if I have ALSA, and I don't know what to get off of the download FTP. .....

Hey! I have this up2date thing on Fedora, I think that takes care of ALSA(now I just have to get that module, but still no XORG config file...

lowpingnoob 06-12-2005 08:49 AM

Only problem is it just so seems that that up2date program freezes if you try to update more than one thing at a time. This is going to take forever. But, I still need help with both my video and sound. I need to change the xorg config and log, and I don't under stand that, and I need to install this module for ALSA, but that has step by step directions on the website.

lowpingnoob 06-12-2005 08:53 AM

nope, i still am clueless, it talks of a module i cannot find(sound), code that I cannot understand (sound and video). Someone please please help..

lowpingnoob 06-12-2005 09:00 AM

Is there any program I can get like Windows remote access so I can get somebody to be able to help better with my XORG config and log files, and with compiling my sound drivers?
