Question Drive mapping problem with Steam solved, on to the next problem (displays in games)

In my last post I described a problem I was having with Steam in my UALinux's Ubuntu game distro. A user named Uteck provided a solution. Thank you.

Now I'm on to a set of "display" issues while gaming. I post as one "problem" because my instincts are telling me these issues are intertwined with each other.

a)Doom 3 from Steam (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_3) starts to launch, opens a window, then craps out with the error message that I've pasted at the very bottom of this post. the game Insurgency does the same (but with Insurgency there's no crash report).
b) Dos based Doom games will launch from Steam but the graphics are worse than they'd be on a 386 with and the oldest VGA card. I know there's a number of Doom emulators out there that will work as long as I have the wad files, which I do, but there's no reason why they shouldn't work through Linux Steam. Also some of those emulators show a very bouncy Doom guy (the player's view) unlike Doom's actual display. That particular issue is most pronounced in the shareware version of Hexen FWIW.
c) Team Fortress 2 crashes via Steam.
c) I installed the original Soldier of Fortune via 'PlayOnLinux' and it installed perfectly. But it won't run, keeps crapping out saying it can't find OpenGL.
d) FWIW - Of the ones I've installed thus far the following games work perfectly and look great through Steam (Half-Life 1 & 2, Half Life Blue Shift, Counter Strike: Source, & Albion Online).

What I've tried so far to fix these issues:
1) I grabbed a cornucopia of OpenGL patches for Linux and Windows based on my graphics card. I've installed the Linux ones (via packages) straight away and installed the Windows ones via PlayOnLinux to the Solider of Fortune directory and it's so-called main directory.
2) I've also installed a number of listed support packages within PlayOnLinux including DirectX9 and OpenGL.
3) I've installed the Linux drivers for my card (end of life drivers, they won't be updated anymore) straight away and Installed the Windows ones in the so-called root of PlayOnLinux.
4) Stream auto-installed something called "Proton 3.17" and upon Googling it, it seems that's supposed to help these issues but alas, it has not.

Thank you!!

Hi, Its me again!
Most issues like this can find fixes by copy/paste the error into Google.
I found this link that may help: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/488
Seem like this issue has been around for years with older graphics cards.

Question

Thanks again Uteck!

I'll read the materials at the link you posted. Do you (Uteck) or anybody else have any ideas for the 'PlayOnLinux' issues or any other ideas for anything I've listed in this post? Maybe someone has something they used that worked for one or more of these related issues that they might have had in the past.

Thank you all !

Post More info

Since I wrote the first post to this thread, I've got Unreal Tournament and Enemy Territory to work in PlayOnLinux/Wine but I still haven't solved the other issues I listed.

It's a little funny about Enemy Territory, there's a Linux version but for the life of me I couldn't get it to work so I downloaded the Windows version and installed/ran it through PlayOnLinux and it works like a charm. Likewise I know that Unreal Tournament has an available Linux version but its a bit complex to get it to run so I used the Windows version in PlayOnLinux, had to tinker with things a bit, but now I got it working great.
