sudo apt-get install fortune
sudo apt-get remove fortune

but the name of the package could be slightly different than just "fortune".

why do you think that you need dpkg?
what i wrote, that's the way to install/remove software on ubuntu. fortune is in the repos, so there's no need to use dpkg. but if you insist, "man dpkg" might provide insight.

To install something with dpkg, you need to download the package file.
One way to download the package file is using apt-get download; the file will have a .deb extension.

The disadvantage of dpkg is that it doesn't resolve dependencies - if a prerequisite package is missing, it will just give up instead of installing the missing package.
