Downloading via webbrowser

I have a problem downloading files from any web browser I use (Konquerer, Mozilla) and I have yet to figure out what is going on. When I go to download a file all the prompts are fine, asking me if I want to save it or open it, where I want to save it to, etc but after OK'ing everything a box pops up saying the download was complete and showing the 'elapsed time' and no program shows up in the directory. I have no idea what's going on. FTP and everything else works fine, though

Thanks

Edit: I can download under root

what is the location that your saving the file too.. cause if you are a regular user trying to save to a dir that you have no access to, this will happen in some cases.

Can you copy a file to /home/adam/download when logged on as adam? If not, did you create the download directory as root? Make sure the download directory has write permission for adam.
