How do I extract and install web downloads?

you probably shouldnt. what are you trying to install and what distro are you using. assuming fedora:

yum install vlc

would install vlc and automatically look for and install any dependancies so you could be fairly certain there are no trojans or viruses in it since it comes from an official source.

theres also a gui software store somewhere in the menu.
