downloaded some programs / drivers where to from here.

Please excuse my ignorance.
Just loaded ubuntu 4.10, 1 day ago - ( my first try at linux )
wanted a driver for my printer , found that and
downloaded the files , found an anti- virus program downloaded
it also. Problem is how do I get from this point to up and running.
I am reading lots of instructional pages BUT I really don't know how in linux.
Do I create directories for the files/ extract to where? The downloaded print driver contains several files, how do I get those files ino the the places they need to be?
