Downloaded firefox-9.0.1.tar.bz2 and attempted to install it using terminal.

My problem is that, after typing the codes found on THIS website:

http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/...x%20on%20Linux

Firefox won't open anymore! -insert very long keyboard smash here- My aunt bought this laptop a few years ago and, since it's pretty old, we decided to update firefox by downloading the latest version.

I don't know what to do...I'm panicking right now because I'm really not good at Linux computers. And I need the web browser badly. -again, insert keyboard smash here- I'm just sixteen by the way, so please make your answers (if you have any) simplified because I don't really understand technical terms.

I hope you can help me.

Thank you!

.tar.bz2 is an archive format (just like .zip in windows)

So, you extract the archive with your archive manager (just double-click in most distros, or right-click and choose Extract).

Then open the extracted folder, you will see a file called firefox. This is a binary executable (like .exe) in windows. Double-click and it will run (or right-click Run if necessary).

BUT...

What Linux distribution or "distro" are you using? Ubuntu/Mint/Debian/Slackware/etc?

Because most distros have a VERY EASY way to install firefox. Tell us which distro and we will tell you the easy way. :)

About the extracting thing-o, I've already tried that, but this thing pops up and says that it's an error of some sort (I'm sorry I don't really know what it's called and I just turned off the Linux laptop because I'm now scared of it) then I click 'ok' and this window says 'Press ENTER to continue' and I press enter and the window disappears.

I still have to ask what linux distribution my aunt is using though. Give me a couple of minutes.

Sorry if I'm not that great in describing things -hides-

Edit: My aunt doesn't know! -gasp- She said it's for ODT or something. I am not familiar with Linux terms. Plus I reopened the laptop and I kinda misplaced the firefox folder. I remember fixing it up last night and checking the system stuff. I don't recall the things I clicked. Maybe that's the reason why the firefox folder is now missing...

...I'm downloading the whole .tar thing from another laptop and saving it on a usb to transfer to the Linux one. I'm really making my life difficult. -shot, facepalm, keyboard smash-

Thank you again!
