Downgrading a kernel

Is it possible to do kernel compilation from a newer version to a much older version is the case of software compatibility?

I used opendiamater version 1.0.7-f which i found easy to install in FC 2 rather FC 4 which meets many errors in the process of building/installing opendiameter. Does any one use opendiameter 1.0.7-f or g on FC4?

My intention is to downgrade the kernel of FC4 to FC2 kernel.
Thanks for any quick reply. Help really appriciated.
Bye.
Zack

well you won't be able to install that kernel from fc2 directly, so you will be faced with the need to compile that kernel from scratch. as such there are a lot of patches that would have been applied to the fc2 kernel, and also a lot of configuration options you could easily miss, leaving a kernel that just plain doesn't work. i assume this would actually mean you are wanting to install a 2.4 kernel, and jumping back that gap might also cause some problems. You might as well try using the most recent 2.4 kernel if that is indeed where you're going, so many features you are currently relying on on the default fc5 kernel like udev and such will possibly also be in the latest 2.4 branches too, but essentially you will not get that exact fc2 kernel running anyway, maybe it's better to look into the problems you're having now as you'll probably have very little fun getting an old kernel going...

Thanks acid_kewpie.
So your answer to recompile a kernel from new to an older one is doable? Possible without heavy problems?
Well, compiling a kernel from scratch seems challanging for a newbee but if it is success, its worth of trying.
Do you know any great documentation for newbees on compiling a linux kernel that u may suggest? There are so many of them differ from 1 distro version to another. You said that miss to include certain options may lead to problems or plain kernel. Well if theres any step by step guide that might lead to a complete working recompile kernel including the options that must take into account and precaution steps while doing it, for those who now it, can you guys give me some links?
I asume some of the software i run currently on FC4 may not working if I recompile the kernel with an older version.
Thanks for any reply

I take it FC4 doesn't include any kernel choices?

For instance when I installed MEPIS 3.3.2, it gave me an option to install both a 2.6 & a 2.4 kernel.

Wouldn't it be better to try to solve the errors you're having building the program rather than reverting to an old kernel that might have unforseen consequences for other programs on your system?
