dovecot authentication error

I'm trying to get IMAP (dovecot) working for remote IMAP connection to another computer on my network. Currently Sendmail is working great, squirrelmail is working great, and IMAP on local is working fine. I'm running Linux Fedora Core 2, with Sendmail, Dovecot, and Saslauthd, spamassassin.

when I try to connect to the linux server from WinderzXP machine, set up to run IMAP through Netscape. server is mail.XXXXXXX.net. DNS is working properly, and winderz machine has no problems connecting- but will not authenticate.

Jun 24 20:33:39 homer dovecot(pam_unix)[2649]: authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=john

I have no problems logging in with Squirrelmail or on the local machine with Netscape. All problems occur when I move myself physically to the winderz computer, and try to connect remotely. No problems with Squirrelmail connecting remotely either.

Thanks in advance if anybody is able to help.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have installed dovecot and sendmail. Sendmail works fine but dovecot gives me an authentication error when I try to log in to the pop server. The client connects to the server but tells me that the password failed to authenticate. What am I doing worng. My authenitcation is set to defaulr and database is passwd. I have been trying to get it work for three days now and I am very frustrated. Can some one help me?

Snurckle, what kind of authentication are you using with Dovecot? In particular, what is your auth_mechanisms set to in dovecot.conf? Dick Clark -- the same question (about auth_mechanism) applies to you. I use auth_mechanism = plain and I've heard of certain clients having trouble if it is set otherwise. It might also help to try telneting to port 110 and trying to send raw POP3 commands directly (there are numerous sites on the Web that say how to do this), since I've noticed sometimes Dovecot gives more verbose error messages that way. Also, check your maillog and see if anything looks suspicious.

OK, got it to connect to the server and I am able to log in using telnet. Now the problem is that the connection gets dropped immediately. the maillog file tells me that i get a getgroups() error. Help

I'm using dovecot as well with the same configuration as above but when I try to login using squirrelmail, I get the following message: "You must be logged in to access this page".

I've been trying for days to figure out what's causing it to no avail. I can manually telnet to localhost port 143 and login with no problem. Any idea why Squirrelmail is giving me this error?

Can someone post a known good working copy of dovecot.conf that is working with sqirrelmail and FedoraC2 ?

Thanks!!
