Dont want to kill the penguin!

I've been useing Linux for just about two months now and loving it!! Now I still remain with a windows partition on my HD because I just don't want to give up all those great games! :-(..

I'd like to reformat my windows partition so that it's clean and it will only be used for my windbloze games :-), I figure I'll attempt this by inserting the recovery disk and do a format and recover and then uninstal all the crap I don't need..

My Question:

I've never worked with a dual boot up until now and I'm a little worried that I'm going to wipe out my Linux! partition while doing this, Is there anything I should do or look out for while useing the winbloze recovery disks? It should not touch my linux partition should it?

Thanx in advance for any suggestions, advice

No windows is unaware of linux partitions (except NT/2000/XP which can erase linux partitons if you tell it so during setup), the only concern is MBR if lilo is there you'll need to get it back to MBR (you have your boot floppy for linux, don't you?)

doh! :-).. that's right Lilo...

Thanks.. so by MBR you mean Master Boot Record?... How would I go about restoreing it?....

Thanks

I would suggest you using the programm "sfdisk /dev/hda" (assuming your hard disc is the primary device, else try hdb etc.)

With this you can see all the partitions on your system and delete windows from there.

be careful with this program and keep cool ;->

You can restore lilo to your MBR by plopping in your Mandy disc and typing rescue. Then arrow down to the "install lilo into the MBR" choice. :)

Make sure you have created a boot disk before re-installing windows.
If you can boot into linux with the boot disk, you could execute the 'lilo' command.

Or you can run the Mandrake Control Center in KDE or from the console as root run either DrakConf or mcc.
