To know your distro, find "Terminal" and type:

lsb_release -a

Then:

uname -a

Then

cat /etc/issue

This will give you enough info.
Then read this article: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

Learning Linux from the beginning when you are Windows user is very difficult.

i feel so dumb i cant even find the "terminal" either
this is pretty frustrating

If you toke a normal man, shoved him in the cockpit of an airplane would you expect he would know how to take off? it's unlikely, take an experienced pilot and to them it's child's play. The difference is experience and we all have to start somewhere so don't be too hard on yourself.

r3sistance is right. First days (weeks) with Linux are extremely complicated. You will have to learn everything from the very biginning even if you're Windows expert. Just be patient.

RyRi420 08-08-2010 04:35 AM

my comp. says to find the terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+t but it still wont work when i type in what you told me to type in it says bash:lsb_release command not found

RyRi420 08-08-2010 04:45 AM

the name of my terminal is called uxterm... i am guessing since its the name that pops up when i press ctrl+alt+t
if this helps you guys help me understand

Come on, Don't know what distro you are running
I know we like to tell new users that there are no dumb questions-BUT
To install the OP had to download the Distro Surely you would know what site you downloaded from.
If someone gave it to you, you talked about it ??
Got it out of a Mag.
Windows expert
What happened to not Installing unknown software.
Using an OS is not like flying a plane the OS (Linux,OS 10, Windows) would be a part maybe the computer is the plane, the OS the wings.
No dumb questions? This post has to be a joke--No one puts programs on computers and not know what you Installed.
Linux is not Complicated-People make it so How can we get real users to try Linux when we use terms like extremely complicated- Just tell the Op Linux is NOT windows-Can't find the terminal--Can You Read?
You are not ready to update firefox yet-need to know what you are running -understand your OS-Just my 2 cents good luck Anyway

RyRi420 08-08-2010 05:02 AM

if you know so much dont sit there and make people feel like dumb asses no i didnt ask where or how he got it he told me the basics on how too use it like internet and such. your not helping and all i need to know is more about how too update and how too work the linux os.

Mr. Alex 08-08-2010 05:14 AM

RyRi420, try to install Ubuntu on your new PC. This will at least give you knoledge what you are running.

Wim Sturkenboom 08-08-2010 05:16 AM

Please post the result of uname -a as requested in post #2; that command will work in any distro and might reveal something.

The other commands in post #2 will not always work.

RyRi420 08-08-2010 05:21 AM

so its letting me download ubuntu is that cuz i was downloaded already?
