Hi,

I need help with installing apache directory studio from source onto my Ubuntu Server 12.04. After reading the following link, I got it installed onto my server successfully.

I then went to start the service
/etc/init.d/apacheds-2.0.0-M7-apacheds start
Starting ApacheDS - apacheds...

My silly question is how to open the application. I know that its service has started but I don't know how to open it. Sorry for this dumb question as I'm still learning linux.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what do you mean by open it? what do you expect?

If you type the following into a web browser: http://localhost/index.html, you should see a page which says IT WORKS. If you get that, you can then begin populating the directory with whatever files you want there. Usually, they are in the /var/www directory and subdirectories.

Apache is a service, once it's started it runs in the background, handling any incoming requests. There is no interactive application to "open".

Pan64, I meant by opening the application is to get the user interface of the apache Directory studio dialog box or something. I know that ubuntu is different from Windows. In Windows OS, you can double click on the application to open it. You thus get a pop-up GUI of the application. I suspect it works differently in linux. I now got its service started but don't know how to get its GUI to show up. Anyway, that's ok I'll have another read of its manual which is in your link.

Yancek & suicidaleggroll, I got the apache running and I got the page "it works". It's all good but this time it's the apache directory studio (used for LDAP administration) that I want to get working, not the apache itself.

apache doesn't have a gui. it doesn't need one. apache is meant to run on servers without a gui. command line is all you need for it.

You can either look in your desktop's menus Applications->Development->Apache Directory Studio or something like that or either install the Eclipse IDE plugin for ApacheDS.
Alternatively, try opening a terminal, type apache and press <TAB> twice to see the autocompletion choice. If there's something like apacheds or so, launch it (type the full name of the command and hit enter).
