Your best bet would be to call Dell, or ask the shop/person you bought the system from. |
I recommend you do a fresh reinstall of the operating system of your choice (Windows or Linux). I always do this when I purchase a used computer--why would you want someone else's data, settings, documents, configuration, viruses? Start fresh. :)

Poor Janet got took.

Is it a boot up (BIOS) password that's requested before the OS starts to boog? Try removing the CMOS battery for about ten minutes. If it's an OS login password, just do as the others suggest and just install over it.

True story; I bought a used computer once, took it home, started snooping around the hard drive, found photos of the street I used to live on in a different city! Turns out the person I bought the computer from bought it off eBay from my old neighbor in my old city! :)
Moral of the story: If you are selling a computer, wipe the hard drive. If you are buying a used computer, wipe the hard drive. Not to make you paranoid, but what if the previous owner used it for something illegal, or what if it is infected with a virus/trojan sending out spam emails, or... ? |
I agree, start with a clean fresh install, then and only then will it truly be yours...
