Does this exist!

I am fairly happy with Linux thus far.
However, I would like to find some sort
of software that would let me use programs
such as "Core FTP" in order to update my sites.
(I was hoping for some sort of emulator software.)
At this time I still have not figured out how
to fix the editing problem I have with
the Linux programs I have been using.
I can get in and out of my files,
I just cannot edit them as of yet.
Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Core FTP is a Windows application so this leaves you with two choices, install wine or use xen with a virt-install of Windows.

please use better thread titles in future, but as for your question, many bits of windows software will run within wine. give it a go. I'd urge you to look to work with the linux tools rather than fight against them for what you know. may well be much easier in the long term.

Uncle_Theodore 01-17-2008 04:06 PM

I don't know why you'd want to run a Windows version of FTP/SFTP client such as CoreFtp, when Linux has many well-developed tools for everything it does, but anyway. You can try running CoreFTP under WINE. It's Windows emulation software.
As to editing files, you probably don't have write permissions on them. Could you describe your problem in more detail?

acid_kewpie 01-17-2008 04:14 PM

no, wine is not an emulator. it is a compatability layer, which is very different.

Even the name stands for that...

Wine

Emulator

There is a list of Linux FTP programs at http://linuxappfinder.com/internetan...ing/ftpclients

phantom_cyph 01-17-2008 05:02 PM

You can also use Firefox's fireftp extension.

Yeah, I know what wine stands for. :) In layman's terms, however, it makes more sense to say it's "something like an emulator", than to scare people off with a "compatibility layer" term... Don't you think? :)
But, OK, OK, wine is not an emulator, I know, I know...

No it doesn't. To try an inject layman terms that are not correct causes confusion. 'An emulator duplicates (provides an emulation of) the functions of one system using a different system, so that the second system behaves like (and appears to be) the first system.'

Cannot explain it any better.

As for WINE;

Quote:

from WINE;
Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.

Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.
Big difference when you know the definitions.

Filezilla is a decent ftp client for Linux, imho.

ScotHypnotist 01-18-2008 01:57 AM

WINE or a virtual version of windows ehh?

Lenard,
Thank you for your reply.
I actually have WINE installed but,
I am not really making heads or tails of it.
I will have a look at the other option which
may be more akin to what I am looking for.
Thank you for your help!

Uncle_Theodore,
My difficulty is that in my previous OS,
I was able to edit my file both locally and remotely.
I am very accustomed to that.
I do have Filezilla and WINE installed but,
that are not behaving in the same manner.
Please forgive me for being a bit of a hold out but,
some conveniences are hard to let go of.
I will be answering the other nice replies
later of today.
I really do appreciate your input!

if you want to transparently edit a remote file as if it were local, try ftpfs or sshfs under the fuse project. i'm sure when you have them working, you'll no longer see the windows equivalent as a convenience at all.

Could you tell me more?

Phantom,
Could you tell me more about
Firefox's fireftp extention?
The question that comes to mind
is if I used the command line
"sudo apt-get____________install" what would I
type in the blank space?
