Mandrake is not bad, but version 9.2 is quite old now. What you will be missing out on is the newer packages and programs that have been developed since Madrake 9.2 came out. For example, openoffice 1 comes with Mdk9.2, but version 2 is out now. Since you have bought a Mandrake centric book (i guess), you should stick with Mandiva 2006 (the latest version of Mandrake).

Alternatively, as some of the other posts have said, try Ubuntu. It is very good for newbies, and easy to upgrade and maintain.

If the purpose is to learn linux, and not produce anything (schoolwork, office work, email, blablabla), I suggest slackware, LFS, or Gentoo.
