Does OpenSuSe 12 have a software center like Ubuntu?

Hello, I am new to OpenSuse and I was wondering how to find and install software. I used DeVeDe on Ubuntu to make DVD ISO's, but I can not find a list of installable programs. I have looked at YaST, but I was unable to locate a selection to find software in a general sense, such as; other Libra office software (Database, or Publisher).
Thank you

Does YaST > Software Management not have what you need?

zypper is the command line tool, I find it very easy to use.

Yast > Install and Remove Software
or sometimes just Install and Remove software, depending on GUI and which menu you are looking at.

...Libra office...
It is LibreOffice, so a search for 'Libra office' won't find anything.

check the wiki
http://en.opensuse.org/Main_Page
and the OBS
http://en.opensuse.org/Portal:Build_Service
for OpenSUSE 12.2
http://software.opensuse.org/122/en
for example type in "gimp"( yes IT IS ALREADY INSTALLED)
http://software.opensuse.org/search?...penSUSE%3A12.1

also read the documentation
http://doc.opensuse.org/

seeing as OpenSUSE is VERY VERY tightly controlled by Novell ( SELD11 &SELS11 )
you MUST register and login to the novell web site

so the answer is " yes and no"
there are some repos to install( and priorities to SET!!!) then yast is sort of a "software center "

but opensuse is VERY controlled by novell so you do need to use the novell guides

?

I have never had to register, log in, or do anything else with novell to fully utilize my OpenSUSE installs, nor have I EVER had to use software.opensuse.org, or any of the novell guides.

Libre Office should already be installed too. What Desktop manager are you using? for any media file you want to play you need to install the codecs, these are different for Gnome and KDE. If you have Xfce and LXDE then use the same codecs as for Gnome.

YasT software manager is what you need to install more programs, However YasT doesnt looks like the Ubuntu Software Center, YasT is just a list of applications in the Software Center you can see screen shots and reviews of the application.

So, no there is no Software Center for OpenSuse, just YasT and you can also find more applications in the Package Search at this link http://software.opensuse.org/122/en just type the name of the software you are looking for, search and download and YasT will take care of the rest.

Dont try to install files with the .deb extension because it wont work. Anyway Devede should be there but to use you need to install the CODECs first.

Good luck to you!

Devede is in the Packman repos, like most multimedia apps.
Follow this guide to add Packman.

reply to all

I apologize for not responding sooner, I had a long weekend.
I am using the kde desktop. so far I am liking the interaction between user and machine more with the OpenSuSe. I was using Ubuntu, which I did like and still do, I feel that now I must learn real language instead of pointing and clicking.
Thank you all for the help.
