I am new to RHEL. I've allocated a Rackspace Cloud Server -- a virtual machine in the rackspace cloud -- which is running RHREL 6.3. When I check the cpuinfo, it reports an Opteron 4170 HE -- a 6-core chip I believe -- but the output suggests there is only one core:

My Ubuntu machines always list one proc for each available core. Is RHEL different in this respect?

The above output shows one processor/cpu. (/proc/cpuinfo is the same on all linux distro's).

You mention this being a VM; Did you (or the provider) allocate one core?

Thanks for your response. I wasn't aware that you could allocate cores to a VM and am kind of miffed that Rackspace may have allocated fewer cores to our new managed virtual machine than were allocated to our old one.

I'm guessing that this is probably an issue to take up with tech support at Rackspace?

I have learned that things have changed a bit at Rackspace lately and that my virtual machine was only allocated one core. This is a bummer for me but makes complete sense for Rackspace.
