My favorite research tool is a bootable USB flash drive with the latest version of my preferred version of Linux on it.

HP G6 and nomodeset

I am helping a friend set up a G6 with Linux... she choose Mint/Cinnamon... but, we have to pause boot up to add the nomodeset each time... is there a way to avoid this?

Yes, you can edit the Grub files. Here is a link as to how: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 It is for Ubuntu but should work with Mint

As a note, you should not start your own question in a solved thread. It is easy to get missed that way!
