Does Linux have a Program Files directory?

Hi,

I was wondering if Linux has a Program Files directory like Windows does. I want to install Firefox along with some other programs later and would like to have a standard installation directory.

If you let them go the mozilla.org products will install
themselves in /usr/local by default, which is a sensible
enough place :)

Cheers,
Tink

Just one more really stupid question. Do I have to be logged in as root to install Firefox or any program for that matter?

You have the freedom as a normal user to install programs
to your home ... by default that would make them private to
that user account. If you want them to be accessible for
various users you will want to install as root.
