It all depends. Some small shops would go out of business if their computers were taken over/destroyed. Or if their data were compromised.

IT can also refer to the programmers that create the system in the first place. Except that on the programmer side, once you're completed your task, you're fired.

Only if the company is big enough. Most companies are not and only want to have what they couldn't buy off the shelf. Most companies just want their bike shed and begone with you. The better you are, the faster the job ends. But that's the programmer side. On the admin side you get to stick around chasing the squirrels off the roof and repainting the shed every couple months. Depending on if the company hates squirrels more than they hate you and if "paint" was in last years budget.

If that were the case, then you wouldn't have been hired. Your description is of a single job contract. An employee has rights to sue for wrongful discharge.

Perhaps the right, but not the means. When you had to relocate on your penny to take the job. And you only got to work six months of any given year on average. Which is barely enough income to pay off the relocation and save up a small amount to live on for the dry period. At least for those of us who like smaller cities and don't even consider working for tech giants. If you're going to be unemployed, not paying $2K a month in rent has it's perks.
