Give Ubuntu a shot.
 

Slackware's not a bad choice if you want the Linux Experience, but if you are just an average guy with limited computer talents, go Ubuntu. I thought it babied me a little too much, but that's probably good for "the average guy". The biggest problem I ever had with it was getting wireless to set up quickly. Otherwise, the file browser and package manager work fairly well.
