documentation on xorg.conf
yo,
where can i find documentation on how to configure xorg.conf? i want to set it up so that i can change between 1024x768 and 800x600 resolutions (currently my only options are 640x480 and (egad!) 320x240. also i will want to bump up teh refrash rate to about 70. eventually i need to configure for dual monitors, but one thing at a time :) all i've been able to find online so far are settings for certain types of monitors, not any general FAQ or How-To's or anything. does anyone know where i can find something like this, or a beefy documentation site? www.x.org has been a pain to doc hunt :( |
oh and BTW i'm using freeBSD. AFAICT the setup for xorg.conf is the same though
|
in fact, is there a port that will do this for me? (i know i know, i should have posted this in the *BSD forum. if a mod wants to he or she can move it there)

In Slackware, "man xorg.conf" lists the configuration sections in the order in which they occur in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provides pretty clear information about the available options per section/subsection. I normally wouldn't recommend "man" (it tends to give me headaches), but the structure of this one is pretty good.
My apologies if you allready tried this. JJ |

hmmm... i do have an old install of Fedora Core on the Slug (an old computer of mine), and i recall that having preinstalled configurations for various hardware types. maybe i can jimmy with it and import the conf file from there. i'll check out the man pages first though, so i don't blow anything up ;) |
i can tell that the man page writers strive to be very professional:
"VIDEOADAPTER SECTION Nobody wants to say how this works. Maybe nobody knows ..." lol. |
