Document viewer issue
Hi all,
Im having some problems with my document viewer (Im running Gnome on a rhel5 box). If I open a pdf file from the desktop by just double clicking it I only get the first page. My default viewer is Evince but I also have acroread available. If i select to open with acroread it opens the full pdf. So its a bit of a two fold question: Firstly, how do I fix the problem when clicking on the pdf file to open the whole document using evince? Secondly, How do I change my default viewer to acroread? The previous point I'd like to solve if possible even though I dont really want to use Evince unless I have to. Probably a piece of cake for many of you guys but I'm a bit of a beginner.... Cheers |
As to the second point: to change the default viewer
right-click on the file go down to "open with .." make sure that "always use this application" is checked Concerning the first problem, I have never had this problem with evince (although I don't use Fedora or RedHat. I would file a bug on the redhat bugzilla. |
Thanks Andrew,
Dont know how I never spotted that before. It was in properties when I right clicked. Not sure about the Evince issue but another thing I noticed when logging in again is that Evince seems to be starting up automatically but with no document selected. Any ideas on how I might stop this from starting automatically? Ive tried running chkconfig --list but it does not appear in here so Im a bit stumped. Is there another file somewhere which states what should be started up automatically on log in? Cheers |
you could either try running
Code:
gnome-session-properties or look in ~/autostart/ directory or maybe somewhere in /etc/xdg/ I'm not sure where redhat puts the global gnome .configs |
Hi again
Ok I checked my session preferences and evince isnt listed in there. I checked /etc/xdg/autostart and this just seems to be files relating to the programs set to start in the gnome-sessions-properties window. Trawled through my .gnome2 directory also with no joy. Oh well Ive gone for the brute force option in the end...... I uninstalled evince. Job done.....haha just my desktop when I log in Ah Bliss!! I have three other document viewers available so its not a big deal. Thank you for your help again. The tips will help me trouble shoot in the future although I'm aware I wont just be able to uninstall everything if it gives me a problem. |
I think the problem is with the document itself. Can you post the pdfinfo info?
|
Hi amani,
I'm not sure if it was the actual document causing the problem. As I said before it was working fine with acroread, KPDF etc. In fact if I opened the pdf (or any pdf in that directory) from the command line it read the whole document. I think the whole thing of evince starting uo on login had a part to play but I could be wrong. This is the o/p from the pdfinfo for one of the docs: [jimmy@sedef Manuals]$ pdfinfo manual.pdf Title: manual.book Author: lcrankey Creator: FrameMaker 7.1 Producer: Acrobat Distiller 8.2.3 (Windows) CreationDate: Thu Jul 22 09:23:43 2010 ModDate: Thu Jul 22 09:23:43 2010 Tagged: no Pages: 222 Encrypted: no Page size: 595.22 x 842 pts (A4) File size: 3913862 bytes Optimized: yes PDF version: 1.4 Hope thats what you were looking for.
