Document in document trouble
 

First, I must apologize for my gaff way back in February. I did not know it was a breach to say that I would pay for services. It wont happen again.

My current problem is with Libre Office in Ubuntu. I will try to explain.

I have Documents (Doc A and Doc B) Doc A is a diary and consists of daily entires (Obviously).

Doc B is a Doc I took from my normal Document files and inserted into Doc A.


Now when I open Doc A a dropdown states: This document contains one or more links to external data would you like to change the Document and update all links to get the recent data ...Yes...No (I do not know if the "This Document" refers to A or B)

If I press yes, nothing happens that I can see.

I press no and the diary doc opens. If I go to the inserted Doc B and try to edit that Doc I get the message: write protected..content cannot be changed...No modification accepted.

Now what I would like to do is to remove Doc B from Doc A but keep Doc B in my document files.

Obviously you didn't just copy and paste doc B into doc A. How did you do it exactly? And if you don't mind my saying, you don't want a diary in digital form on a PC. Someone will find it sometime.

I used the highlight the Doc B in the Document file (The dairy file is in there as well) thne used Ctrl C to hold Doc B, went to Doc A in its separate on going site and pressed Ctrl V.

My dairy life is not all that interesting, just doctors appointments and what I need to remember myself. I am near 80 now and I just stumble on getting through each day with as little drama as can be managed.

Then it sounds like you did copy and paste. I recommend you to try http://ask.libreoffice.com. Usually just searching on that site will get you the answer you need. I'm not wimping out. I would need a much better description of the problem; something that would be difficult to provide.

And, if you're in your eighties, you can probably safely keep a digital diary.

Please check out setting in the "Tools >> Options >> Libreoffice Writer >> general" breadcrumb and see the value under UPDATE LINKS WHILE LOADING. It should have radio button responses Always / On Request / Never.

Choose "Always", save the settings, close and reopen DocA and see the result.

"This document" clearly - IMO - refers to DocA.

For really testing it out, then make a change to DocB and see whether it reflects inside DocA. Next create a DocC and link it also (copy and paste) into DocA. Open DocA and see the result. Now close DocA and then delete DocC but keep the link. See the result in DocA. Irrespective of the Options setting, does it caution you as expected.

What is the option now? Please tell us. Try different options and see the behaviour.
