Do i need to allow FTP ports to install Gentoo?

I've been convinced that networkless installation of gentoo shouldnt take place so i will try to install the right way but i need to know first whether it installs from ftps or https because i connect through a gateway which doesn't allow ftp connections :x

Thank you.

well it would depend on the ebuild in question, there is no distro wide specification for this. as far as remember the majority of ebuilds will use https for the URI to get the files they need, but i can't say for sure that you can get base system without any ftp. i'd suggest doing a --fetchonly when starting your "emerge system" as that will grab the remote files in one go rather than slowly compiling each one in turn. also it's possible to get gentoo images containing precompiled base systems... maybe that's the best way to go.

I started downloading the pacakges-cd, perhaps it'll be enough to start a basic system so i can just mess around with gentoo.
I'm currently not familiar with 'emerge' just heard of it, so i'll try the '--fetchonly' when i'll have some basics with the system.

Thanks a lot.
