Do I need an /etc/modules.conf to use LKM's

I just started compiling linux-2.4.23 with a packet writnig patch, and i made several components modules, and i was wondering if i need a modules.conf file for these modules to be loaded with modprobe. Are modules loaded without modules.conf, and this file just manipulates their default behaviour?

thanks,
behmjose
