Do I need a firewall?

Im not sure which (if any) firewall i should be using,
I got a message informing me that some security files could not bet accessed during the installation of ubuntu 7.10,
Is this common or should i reinstall ubuntu?

How did you install? From cd then update? The installation probably went fine, but the update might have been an issue. There are some problems with the repositories right now.

Regardless, I don't think you should have any firewall problems related to this. You should, however, run a firewall (you probably already are). Use synaptic in the System > Administration menu to get/install firestarter. It has a good interface for beginners.

A firewall adds a layer of protection between you, and the baddies. The only time when it wouldn't be recommended to run a firewall would be when your computer is completely disconnected from the Internet, or any other machines that has potential to connect to a network.
