Do I Install w95, w98,xp to the same drive letter or ...
do i install win95,win98 to the same c: and create a seperate partition for windows xp? then gentoo!
or do i install all the windows to the same partition which is c: but i know my windows xp partition will be fat32. so could i install it to it's own partition and make it ntfs. because i'm not going to need to view it from win98 or 95 anyways. |
well I just read that a basic disk which i have instead of a dynamic disk will allow me to only install four primary partitions. So i'm guessing that since Windows 2000 + now use ntfs i'd be alright with
Windows 95 Windows 98SE Windows XP And my Gentoo Linux! But for the gentoo doesn't that use 3 primary paritions? 1./ 2./home 3.swap Please let me know how I could set my computer up like this. I just finished installing windows 95, and yes it was a hassle because I have an AMD 64 3200+ I was getting that ios error. But I'm lucky to have this computer here also or else i would have taken longer. But i'm installing them in the correct order and I also just read that the operating systems need their own partition. So right now i'm up to windows 98 and going to install another partition for that. Will keep you updated! |
xp can live on the same partition as 98/95, but its not really advisable, can cause headaches. I'd give it its own partition and make it ntfs.
98/95 should ideally go on c:, xp will go anywhere i think. |
But wait Is it possible that I could install
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP, Gentoo to the same basic hard drive. But basic hard drives only support 4 primary partitions. Unless I get another hard drive which i'll be doing later but can I do that? |
ok so I could actually use one partition for windows 95, windows 98?
|
you can install gentoo all on one partition.
Can you not make the 4th partition an extended partition, then put "logical drives" in it. Im not sure how 95 will react to having 98 on another partition as they both put there boot files (the same named files) on the c drive if i recall correctly. |
Not sure. Ive had 98, XP, and ME all on one partition, but it causes problems. Why do you ned 95 and 98. They are pretty much the same os, i'd only install 98
Heres what i'd do hda1 = win 98 hda2 = win2k hda3 = winxp hda4 = extended (iff poss, if not gentoo) hda5 = gentoo hda6 = swap |
Well i'm data recovery specialist or fighting to get better at what I do. And having windows 95 for back in the day backup software that need it. So it's great that I now have it installed. Alright so yes I'll have
1.Windows 95 2.Windows 98 But could I install linux to a logical drive? |
You can install linuc to a logical drive (if thats what they are called, i forget)
windows 98 and 95 are the same. Ive never met an app that runs on 95 but not 98. you should google dual booting 98 and 95, im not sure how its done |
Well i'll learn that tomorrow. So I guess i'm going to do
Windows 95 Windows 98 Windows 2000 Server Windows XP Pro Then with Partition Magic with the extra hd space I have i'll create a logical partition and install my Gentoo to that! Sounds like a leap! or Reads like a big leap! |
hehe, good luck.
p.s. the 4th partition should be the extended one, and any others you need go in it pps: http://www.infinisource.com/techfiles/dualboot.html (bottom part for dual booting 98/95) |
I said i'll learn that tomorrow because I ordered a tape drive that I must do recovery with and I was told the os I needed installed was for windows 95 only. So i'll see if that also works on win98 tomorrow. :) Right now i'm reading alot on this from the microsoft site. Many of their articles tell you good information.
|
I'll just try my stuff right now. I'm going to create logical drives instead of those primary drives and have
windows 95one partition windows 98extended partition windows 2000 server primary windows xp primary partiton then i'll put gentoo on a logical |
Well i'll find out tomorrow really if windows 98 can run everything windows 95 can!
|
It can, the same is not always true in reverse though.
you may need some kind of dual boot prog to install both 9x's (theres a list at the link above) Expect windows problems :) and be prepared to reinstall. You might be interested in 98lite, when i used win it was the best investment i ever made hope all goes well ZzzzZzZzZ time now :) |
