Do I have to be in /usr/src to install printer packages?

Have 4 packages:
bjcups-2.2-1.tar.gz
bjcupsmon-2.2-1.tar.gz
bjfilter-2.2-1.tar.gz
printui-2.2-1.tar.gz
Since I am not sure of what i'm doing, started w/bjcups:code:tar xzf install bjcups
/code After which I was left with a bunch of folders in /home/usr
The installation instructions said to build misc libraries. code:#make
#make install
cd ..
/code
Build "bjcups" and "pstocanonbj".
same as above from respective folder in /home/usr. How do I check if I installed right? Or did I have to be in /usr/src.
Are these packages considered system software? If I did it wrong how do I cleanup what I did and start over? Can someone tell me the correct steps to get these packages installed in Slackware12? Thanks
