i wouldn't suggest gentoo, you should get some other distro first...you should try mandrake9.1 , without installing much software (maybe even only IceWM desktop - without KDE and/or GNOME) - it should be relatively fast...and it's quite stable...
if you want something MORE windows-like, try lindows, lycoris
libranet is very nice, newbie, 1 installation cd only, and powerfull enough :)

No - except you feel that you need to be punished.Don't want to discourage you, though. The install is pretty much straightforward if you don't have any exotic hardware but things do go wrong once in a while and are generally way harder to fix than with regular distros.

Well let me put it to you this way...If you successfully insall gentoo you're not a newbie anymore. Seriously though, I used mandrake for a year before switching to gentoo. I'm not sure I would have been able to survive configuring gentoo without that year of experience...plus i cheated and used the mandrake installer to create the partitions : ) On the plus side after th 7 days it took to compile the system, no kidding really 7 days, my laptop runs great considering it's a 133mhz system.

While you are deciding give knoppix a try. You will be able to get a feel for linux without installing. It boots directly from CD and runs from a RAM DISK. You can even access your Windows hard drive. Great to practice with, xwindows and command line.
