Dnsmasq starting troubles

it says that this is a bad option
dchp-range=ignore,192.168.1.99,192.168.1.99
i am very new to linux but it says that's a bad option to why my dnsmasq service isnt running

acid_kewpie 01-30-2011 03:00 AM

dhcp-range, not dhcp-rang. See the manpage for details.

snowflake 01-30-2011 03:58 AM

it says range that was a mistype by me

acid_kewpie 01-30-2011 05:03 AM

So type it correctly then. We can't be expected to tell you what's wrong with only a single line of info if that line has your typing errors in it, can we? again though, check the dnsmasq.conf manpage for correct options.

some general tips:
  • Post-facto re-editing of your original post makes the thread confusing; anyone coming to the thread after the editing has been done does not easily get the picture. They may then conclude that your postings include random rubbish. If they do, they may move on to another thread that they find understandable, and so it is inadvisable.
  • Cut and paste any error messages, rather than re-typing them; it is much less error prone

...but it says that's a bad option...
What says that its a bad option (where do you see the error message)? When does the error message come? What is the exact error message?

...why my dnsmasq service isnt running...

Are you saying that no task called dnsmasq is running, or that there is a task called dnsmasq is running but that it doesn't do what you want? What did you do to find out?

The range that you specify doesn't seem to be a range in the usually understood sense, but the same IP repeated; is that allowable?

You don't say what you are trying to achieve by using the dhcp-range=ignore feature, so a clue about that might be helpful.

...and welcome to Linuxquestions!

OK, it *STILL* says "dchp"... is this a typo in your config file or a typo in your post? Is there an additional typo in your config file , e.g. dhelephantsintutuscp-range which was corrected by accident in your post here?

I still don't think that if you are using the option spelt correctly it doesn't make sense. if you want to stop a specific IP being dished out, then just set a reservation for that IP.

snowflake 01-30-2011 04:11 PM

that's a typo on here only so was range

snowflake 01-30-2011 04:18 PM

the error message comes up in the server configuration and it's when i try to start my dnsmasq it says:

dnsmasq failed. The error was: Starting dnsmasq
dnsmasq: bad option at line 474 of /etc/dnsmasq.conf
[FAILED]

and that line is dhcp-range=ignore,192.168.1.99,192.168.1.99

so i don't know what to do

acid_kewpie 01-30-2011 04:31 PM

What do you expect this option to do? As above it doesn't seem to fit any possible uses of the option according to the man page. Why have you written it like that? What do you actually want to achieve?

snowflake 01-30-2011 04:38 PM

i want to be able to start the service so i can finally get my social networking site up

acid_kewpie 01-31-2011 01:58 AM

well delete the line then if you don't even know what that one line is there for.
