DNS settings on Debian Linux

I have installed a Debian Linux Virtual machine on my server. I can ping ip addresses globally but I cannot ping domain names (eg www.google.com). This suggests the DNS settings are not correct but I cannot see how to do this. I know once before I set up a hosts files (forgotten its name) but cannot remember what I did which provided a temporary fix. While the temproary fix will allow me to use apt-get to install packages, I need a more permanant fix to this problem
