I am presuming you mean FEDORA 9 (or maybe a different distro, linux is the kernel and that only goes to version 2.6~).

I am guessing you have a firewall up and that is blocking the DNS request? Else wise I am not sure.

or you referring to the VERY,VERY old and unsupported " red hat Linux 9 "
you can also set up dns to read from " open DNS'
primary dns " 208.67.222.222 "
secondary dns " 208.67.220.220 "
DNS search path " opendns.com "

If that is the original Redhat 9 (codename Shrike), then as John VV said, its

VERY,VERY old and unsupported !!

exclamations mine.
Do yourself (and us ) a favour and get a current distro. That one is wide open to exploits and we'll be able to help you a lot better with a current distro eg RH Fedora 8 or 9.

If you're not sure, try these cmds to find the version

cat /etc/issue
cat /etc/redhat-release
uname -a

or go with Red Hat Enterprise 5.2 or CentOS 5.2 .They are the current RH distros .
I don't think there is any of us rh people that still have rh 9 installed anymore .
