Unhappy DNS issue or so i guess

hi guys..

finally i got my debian 3.1r0a machine netconnected and working.. but one problem now arises, i cant ping by name Eg: ping (ping: unknown host it says,... but i can ping by name in my local network, i can ping to google by the IP adress ( but not by name...... what gives

heres my /etc/network/interface file....

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
name Ethernet LAN card

can someone help me, due to this i cant to apt-get update and install software

take a look at /etc/resolv.conf

if its empty add the line

nameserver X.X.X.X

replace the X.X.X.X with the ip of your dns server

thankyou alot skunkburner, that was the problem, the /etc/resolv.conf file contained the following....


i changed it to


now the ping works with,,

however the local ping now dosent work.....

anyway thanks
