Ghetto Linux?
 

(Warning! Speed freaks, overclockers or anyone w/ a modded case need not read further. If you have ever fixed a PC with duct tape or t least think that sounds cool, read on.)

I am a Linux Newbie currently running Win95 on a P120, 16MB Ram, 2gig HD. Don't freak out, it is my 4th PC and I have it in the living room to surf the web once in a while, check web email and play some MP3s. It has *very* minimal use and I am happy with it for the price. (Free)

I want to install Linux on it. I want to be able to surf the web and play some MP3s--that's it. WITHOUT hardware modification.

Please tell me what distro you'd recommend for that box. Please DON'T tell me it can't be done or can't be done well--Win95 is limping along okay right now. There must be a Linux distro that can take its place.

I recommend Slackware, though any distro will do as long as its configured properly but Slackware is relatively simple in terms of how its put together and has a good package selection.
However whatever distro you decide to use you probably don't want to run X(not with 16mb of ram). I have Slackware installed on my laptop, after i boot into the command line and started my mp3 player it only took around 13mb of ram(and I have few services such as sshd, lpd running)
for web browsing you can use a commandline based web browser such as links, w3m or lynx(probably uses the least resource but it doesnt support tables)
If your video card supports it you can use the frame buffer console, with a properly patched kernel you can even have a backgroud wallpaper for it.

However, I would like to avoid anything that involves a command line. (It isn't on a desk and it is easy to use the mouse but not the keyboard.)

If your reeeeally feeling ghetto, there is a program called mp3blaster that is a command line mp3player. it friggin roxors for as ghetto as it is. a definite must have for any distribution:D

Feeling ghetto. I like that. Have you or a friend ever had a beater? I mean a car that you bought for maybe 500 bucks as a winter beater? You know the kind where one blinker didn't work and the radio only played AM but you didn't care becuase it got you from A to B and that was all you wanted out of it? Like that.
