i started about a month ago. i started with knoppix live distro so i didn't have to install anything. it just boots up and runs as long as you configure your bios to look for the cd rom as a boot disk.

i then started hardrive installing linux systems. i have tried knoppix, mandrake 9.2, redhad 9.0, dam small linux. i don't know why but for me redhat GUI installer made life a little eassier for me as a noob. mandrake installer is similar also.

i think i installed and unistalled and installed many many times though before i became more comfortable with it all.

Mandy, no, I tried that. I didnt like it at all. Any others? I heard Gentoo and Red Hat are good.

a distro is only good for a newbie if your a newbie who likes the distro, read up on it.

Wasnt stable really. I wasnt happy with how it operated. Gave me problems with the RPMs as well. Curious, does anyone think Gentoo is good?

You 99% don't want gentoo (not yet) it is a source based distro and you will do lots and lots of compiling. Go download either redhat (9.0) or fedora core 1 (I think thats current) and play with those. They have good wizards for most things, although go poke around your new OS (check out /etc and learn!) anyway, the most important thing really is getting up and running on the internet, once you are, every problem has a solution at google. I was thinking of giving Gentoo a try first, and if it fails then I would stick with Red Hat. I heard RPM based distros cause a lot of problems, thats why I'm trying to avoid them right now. This makes me unhappy about Red Hat, 'poor multimedia support, concerns over the Red Hat to Fedora transition'. Plus whats the difference between Red Hat and Fedora? Also is this true about Gentoo? 'Long and tedious system installation, occasional instability and risk of breakdown, unsuitable for mission critical servers.'

i am using libranet 2.8 and its the best , u should check out its reviews they all give it a gr8 score.

Hmm, interesting...I might give it a try. Whats the difference between 2.8.1 and 2.8? 2.8.1 is a beta release?
