Why can't you boot from CD?

Regardless, does this computer get online? If so, I'd do a Debian Etch Xfce Floppy/Network install. If you don't have high speed, forget it. Basically, you boot the kernel image off a couple of floppies, then if it recognizes your network connection, you download the rest of the OS. It took my PC on a 3mb connection, about an hour to do a network install.

Any limitations that computer has with Linux, will likely be memory related.

Because it's too old to boot from a CD. In which case a boot floppy is needed.

Absolute is a nice distribution, rickh, but it says it requires a 586.

Deli Linux still says it will run on a 486.
