Displaying Kernel Parameters
Hi Everyone,
I need to install software that will change kernel parameters. If something goes wrong later, related with this changes, may be I will need to restore initial settings.
1. How do I check individually a kernel parameter (an example please)?
2. How do I display all kernel parameters at once?
Thanks in Advance.
Regards

I don't know if that's what you want, but you can check the relevant .config file in /boot directory - all the parameters for the kernel you are using are over there.

There's usually a .config file located in /usr/src/linux that has what configurations were used when the kernel was built.

Hi bsdunix,
I am an inexperienced linux user. Can you tell me how can I find this file from the command line? Step-by-step. I read that the file it`s usually hidden.
Thanks,
Kind Regards

Code:
# cd /usr/src/linux
# ls -a
The
-a option shows everything including the dot
.hidden files.
ls - list directory contents
http://linux.die.net/man/1/ls
Code:
# less .config <- display file one screen at a time

Example--to find .config in /usr:
find /usr -name .config

The location of the config file can vary from one distribution to another. On my Debian installation the config file is found in /boot. Its name is config followed by the kernel release number. To find it from the command line use:
ls -l /boot
One of the file names listed is config-2.6.18-5-486. I can list my config file with this command:
less /boot/config-2.6.18-5-486
If your distribution has installed the kernel source then you will find the config file in /usr/src/linux. You can use the ls and less commands to look for the config file in /usr/src/linux.

Most (all ???) binary distros don't ship the source tree. Most do provide the config in /boot. Else look for /proc/config.gz - (if provided) this is the config for the running system. Save that before you start.
Also check /proc/cmdline for boot-time overrides.

Permission Denied
Hi again,
thanks for the help. Finally I found the file in question.
I wrote in the command line: find /usr -name .config
The problem now it`s the permission:
[root@localhost ~]# /usr/src/kernels/2.6.23.1-42.fc8-i686/.config
-bash: /usr/src/kernels/2.6.23.1-42.fc8-i686/.config: Permission denied
I just want to view default kernel parameters because they will change with the installation of a program. Will this file change after?
How can I view or edit the file if with root "powers" the permission remains denied?
Thanks in Advance.

You tried to execute the .config file. It's permissions are marked not executable because it isn't executable. You can display .config with:
less /usr/src/kernels/2.6.23.1-42.fc8-i686/.config

Hi.
less /usr/src/kernels/2.6.23.1-42.fc8-i686/.config
works to display the file.
The output is:
# Automatically generated make config: don't edit

:
It`s not complete because it`s very large, I don`t know how to select everything in the terminal and paste. I would like to know to also.
The problem it`s the initial one, I don`t recognize any kernel parameter displaying this file. I would like to check (if not all) at least:
semmsl, semmns,semopm,semmni,shmmax, shmmni, shmall, file-max, ip_local_port_range parameters.
Certainly with this file it`s not the proper way to do this, at least don`t seem to be.
Any suggestion it`s welcome. Please help me with this.
Regards.

The .config file is the kernel configuration file. Parameters can be displayed and set using sysctl .

Like I posted before before I am interested in semmsl, semmns, semopm, semmni, shmmax, shmmni, shmall, file-max, ip_local_port_range parameters, the only one listed here it`s file-max!
I don`t think it`s safe to change the settings of that parameters without a backup of the default values.
1. How do I check them properly?
2. How do I perform a backup? copy&paste or exists another process?
Thanks in Advance,
Regards

Use
grep to filter output. For example:
Code:
sysctl -a | grep shm
Redirect output to a file for backup.
Code:
sysctl -a > filename
Changes made are lost with next reboot, to make them stick put them in /etc/sysctl.conf.

The answer to your questions is to use a utility script called menuconf. Menuconf is designed to set up the .config file for a kernel compile, display it, save and restore it, etc. The instructions for menuconf can be found in a file called README which should be located in /usr/src/kernels/2.6.23.1-42.fc8-i686.
