Display problems with Dell Inspiron 1501

Hello all. I have recently completed a successful installation of Linux Mint 16 on my desktop PC. I since have installed it on a Dell Inspiron 1501 with not so successful results.
My biggest problem that has me at a complete standstill is the display showing vertical colored lines. I am unable to get past this point even booting from the CD.
The initial install went ok, and I was working on getting the wireless card to work. I shut the machine off, and when I turned it back on, vertical lines.
I have gone into the GRUB and edited a line with "nomodeset" after 'hand off'. I have removed 'quiet splash' and inserted same. I have inserted "nomodeset xforcevesa" and get same results.
I am dead in the water with this. Is there anything else I can try?
I have tried compatability mode and get same.
The card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150
This link was what I was looking at.

Since Mint comes in many versions and you have not mentioned which version or Desktop.

Also since Mint is pretty close to being Ubuntu/

Update

This has really gotten crazy. I attached another monitor to the vga connector and was able to try many things but none of them have worked. I have changed the timeout on the video to 1 minute, and when it awakens, the laptop display will work. Thanks for all your suggestions.
