Display problems in FC6
 

I have installed Fedora Core 6 on my system. The installation was smooth. BUt when I try to boot from GRUB, after the initial stuff of loading all the modules, the screen goes blank, with a beep from the CPU. The light on the monitor turns amber and the other lights on the monitor start blinking. Normally, in case of other distros,the screen comes back on if I press Ctrl+ALt+Backspace, but its not working here.

I tried LIVE distros and Knoppix 4 works perfectly fine. While booting gNewSense the screen goes blank too but comes back on after Ctrl+ALt+Backspace.
What should I do?

My config is:

AMD Athlon 64 2800+
512MB RAM

Could this be a problem with the monitor? But Windows XP SP2 works without any problems whatsoever.

There is some resolution problem in FC6.
Have you got extra graphic card. If yes then before trying with FC6, log on with any other OS and go to BIOS and turn on board graphic card OFF. If on board graphic card is on it uses on board one instead of other. So make sure thats turned off. And then try with FC6, it might work....

hey anant. actually my graphics card is onboard...the thing is i tried openSUSE 10.2 and it is working great. how can i change the display settings in fc6?

You cant really do much until you get logged inn and as you said you can not log inn as screen goes blank.
Are you able to go to BIOS when you start FC6 by pressing F2?

If not then i guess you need to have the different graphic card.(i tried with only FC6 and got this problem.As i didnt tried with other versions at that time so i am really not sure that if its problem of fedora or not.)

But If you can login to BIOS then problem is something else and could be resolved some other way.

It could be a problem with your X server configuration. Since Knoppix works, boot with it and check out what monitor frequencies (Horizontal and vertical) it uses. You can then check out those frequencies in Fedora's xorg.conf file. The file is located in /etc/X11 folder. If you use Knoppix, it will most likely automount your fedora partition.

Alternatively you can look for documentation of your monitor and check out the horizontal and vertical refresh rates. You'll then have to enter those manually in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file in Fedora.
