Question display option if Xfree 86 is not installed

Hello All,

I have setup a Slackware 9.1 box as a Server/NAT. Thus far it has been modifed and setup using a command line interface, which I am comfortable working with. The libraries for Xfree86 have been installed, but binaries were compiled. I now SSH into the box, and would like an intuitive means to have mutliple shells running (anything besides ALT+F1...F6 ??) and adjust the font and display size of both the SSH window (putty) and the font size of the sreen (this is very important). What system variables do I need to adjust so that I can see more text on my monitor, and possibly scroll through the standard output?

What other display options are out there for a BAREBONES graphical that runs clean, and is easy to use?

Thank you for all of the help.

I am not certain, since I haven't tried it, but I think GNU Screen does what you're describing. There's an article at freshmeat that explains more about what it does.
