Display Issues on Old Laptop
 

I am running vector linux 4.0 on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 420CDT. I have been able to get X up and running, however regardless of what I tell it, I am always getting an extremely low resolution and it is very off center (some of the icons are off of the screen) I have run XFree86 -configure which had no problems other than detecting the PS/2 mouse I've got plugged in. I have run the text and GUI X configuration utilities and nothing seems to be happening. Any suggesstions?

In case anyone else has the problem later I found the solution. I ran xf86cfg from the console and filled in my info. I then edited xf86config-4. I deleted all display subsections except for 24-bit and got rid of all resolutions besides 800 x 600.. Then most importantly, I changed the driver from vga to vesa. This fixed the problem and everything looks great. Hope that helped

You may have also been able to use xvidtune. It is a GUI app that allows you to 'move' your screen around until it is centred, and change the h/vsync subtlely (sp?) to make sure it looks good, and then save these changed to your XF86Config file.
