Disk running out of space
 

Hi,

I am New to Linux. I installed Oracle Enterprise Linux on my laptop. Now i am running out of space. Is there a way i can add other available space from my system.

It sounds like you've got a multi-boot system, a 40GB drive (which really isn't very much to begin with, if you're running Vista or something) ... and you decided to give Linux 4GB (a mere 10%) of your drive.

Maybe if you've got enough free space, you can go into Windows disk manager and reduce the size of your Windows partition (giving Linux + Oracle at least 20GB, or something a bit more reasonable).

Otherwise, if you can't free up space from Windows, then perhaps you might consider a bigger HD.

thank you paulsm4 for your reply. I used to run windows XP previously and want to remove it completely. I do not have a dual boot now. Is there a way I can format the other 34 GB and allocate the space to Linux.

Please let me know if i can do this from the Linx itself.

If you wanted to preserve Windows, I'd highly recommend doing it from Windows Disk Manager.

Ideally, maybe you can just run the "install" CD, and reformat the entire disk. If you can afford to start from scratch, that's definitely the easiest/fastest way.

However, if you merely want to reclaim space, you can use Linux "gpartd":

Thank you for the advice. I do not want to preserve Windows. I think i will try the GParted thing first and if i am not able to do that i will go ahead and start from scratch and reinstall Linux again.
