Disk Mounter applet always shows floppy drive

I have FC7 with Gnome. I use the Disk Mounter applet to mount all my removable storage.

Normally this works great. Plug in a USB stick, or DVD ,or CD and bingo the mounted drive icon appears.

However, my admittedly old 3-1/2 floppy drive's icon is persistently visible in the applet even when no media is inserted. When you insert some media, you have to manually ask the applet to mount the media.

I cannot find any applet properties to modify this behavior. The floppy drive is not in my fstab either.

Is this just the way it is??

Floppy drives (at least the ones installed on x86 machines) have no capability to detect when a disk is inserted or removed. So it can't automatically hide and unhide the icon like it can for "smarter" media like USB.

DVD Mounted Icon Hides after 5 minutes

Why does the dvd/cd drives icons disappear after 5 minutes, on fc7. Some say it is hal, others say fstab, but even when they are edited to correctly show the DVD/CD drives, after a while, something changes the files back to the way they were before editing and unmounts even the existance of the drive with the disk in it and the icon disappears again. And then, even if you physically open and then close the drive, it does not show up in /media except for the stinking ".hal-mtab" file in there, but it will NOT acknowledge the existance of the disk. This happens within 5 minutes of logging in.

does anyone know of a way to stop this constant fight with the mounting of DVD/CD drives on the computer and how to correct this?

Thank you
