Disk Activity In The Background

detected hdd actvity during normal usage, and i suspect if linux is doing some HDD task in the background it often takes ages to stop hence slows the system down until it stops!!!

what i would like to know is whats causing it and how to disable if possible

Hi, and welcome to LQ ...

That's a bit of a vague question :)

Some distros do excessive monitoring and loging,
e.g. DeadRat AS 3.0 will write tremendous audit logs
by default ...

To answer proper: what distro are you using?
And what is the process with the highest CPU
usage in the output of top?

using fc3(fedora core 3)! this hdd actvity happens on all the distros i have tried so far!

debian, gentoo, slackware, suse, mandrake, rh9, fc3!!!

you hear the whirring sound the hdd LED comes on then it wont stop for about 10 mins at least!

might it be something like FS check, etc!!!

in any case it happens about every hour
