Disconnected - you are now offline

Hello,
I am a long time Windows user. When XP got old I was like everyone else. Left with what to do. I purchased copies of Win 7 & got those working ok. I am just so tired of Microsoft products. So I took some time & I have read and researched several articles about Linux, Ubuntu, Zorin et al. Earlier this week I loaded a new Zorin OS9 from a DVD into a HP Compaq nx9420. The install worked flawlessly. Damn it is such an easy product to use. Bravo! I have an issue that has been experienced by many newbies. I found several answers to this same question. I read through several replies and went into terminal and typed in the directions. I am still stumped. I need some assistance. I hope someone has the time. I cannot connect to the internet through wireless.

The laptop has a Intel PRO Wireless 3945ABG Wireless network card.

I typed in:

Code:
dmesg | grep iwl

Here is the reply:

david@david-HP-Compaq-nx9420-RB549UT-ABA:~$ dmesg | grep iwl

I am not sure how to decipher the message. Can someone help me?

David W,

Welcome to LQ,

Disconnect your ethernet cable.

Open the Terminal and then copy and paste each of these commands one at a time.

You will be asked for your sudo password initially. Give it and press Enter.

After each command, press Enter.

Code:

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/ipwraw

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945

sudo rm  /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf

Next, add (via copy & paste) this single line to the above file:

Code:

options iwl3945 swcrypto=0

Click on Save and close the file.

Close Terminal.

Reboot the computer.

You should see a message such as "Wireless Networks are available".

If not, then look in the bottom toolbar and hover your mouse pointer over the various icons until you find the one for Wireless (probably a green, V shaped icon).

Click on the name of your Network (SSID).

Next make sure you select the correct Wireless Security protocol (usually WPA2-PSK).

Then type your Wifi key and click on Connect.

After a short delay, your wifi should connect.

Disconnected - you are now offline

Hello Beachboy2,
Thanks so much for the reply. I did exactly as you instructed with the same result. In the top right hand corner it says, "Disconnected - you are now offline". My network icon on the right bottom is two cables apart with a red X. When I selected that and selected my network a little wheel was spinning for several minutes and then the message popped up.

It didn't like something after - gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf.
It replied back -Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar"
A new window opened called EDIT. I put the command options iwl3945 swcrypto=0 in there and saved it.

Just a note. I am using another laptop to talk to you on the same wireless network. It is a Toshiba running Win 7.

Here is the printout:
david@david-HP-Compaq-nx9420-RB549UT-ABA:~$ gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar"

Well I typed into terminal LSPCI -VV.

This was the reply. The network card info is at the bottom. It looks like info is correct to me. I am still not sure of my next move. I still do not have network connection. Can someone help?

David W,

I seem to have made things even worse for you, but don't despair because the 3945ABG can be made to work.

When I had this problem ages ago on a 3945ABG with an earlier version of Ubuntu, I am pretty sure I ended up creating a new /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf file with:

Code:

alias wlan0 iwl3945
options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1

However, there is no point in guessing at a solution.

It may be best to first backup your personal data and do a fresh install.

This time, you could try using nano instead of gedit.

Code:

sudo apt-get install nano
Info on using nano here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/42980...e-text-editor/

You could also see what the output of these is:

Code:

rfkill list all
sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

The output from
Code:

rfkill list all
will tell you whether any signal is being blocked (hard or soft).

It is also worth checking in your BIOS to see if there is a WLAN/LAN switcher.

This must be turned ON as per this thread:

Disconnected - you are now offline

Hello,

Well I deleted all of my connections and started new. The new wireless connection worked. I turned computer off and back on. The wireless connection came up and all is good. Thanks so much for your help.

Regards,
David W
