Can you give a little more detail on the steps you follow? What steps did you take successfully to compile and install your new kernel, and what software sends you this error message (or what are you doing when you see the message), and what is the exact message?

What's a css server?

You can do that if you comment out the initrd line in your /boot/grub/grub.conf or /boot grub/menu.lst file. Jut put a hash "#" in front of the line. If you can't get anywhere once booted up, you can edit it as you boot up. See the GRUB MANUAL for more detail.

If you use LILO, do the same thing in the /etc/lilo.conf file.

Is it possible for you to be more precise in telling like what distro you are using ? what do you mean by css server ? and please give that error description as it is given by system. At the it will be easier for everybody to diagnose the problem.
