Directory to untar a new program to.

Greetings,

I have downloaded the package for 'Kompozer'. It is a .gz file and I know how to untar it but I don't know where to untar it to.

I know it will create a 'Kompozer' directory but I don't know where.

The package is in my 'tmp' directory. How should I proceed? What directory should I first CD to?

Is there a standard directory to use for user installed packages (programs)?

Thanks

This is the file name: kompozer-0.8b3.en-US.gcc4.2-i686.tar.gz

I'm running CentOS 6.7
