Directory Server 9

I just installed Directory Server 9 on RHEL 5.9. I have it up and running and have done an ldapsearch on the Sun Java Directory Server on the "old" ldap server which is Solaris. When I modify the ldapsearch to ldapmodify to try to run the ldap users into my new
Directory Server 9, it errors on attributes that do not have a value. I will need to move about 8000 users this way. I have tried to turn off syntax checking, but it doesn't work. Does anyone know of a setting or something I am missing in the Directory Server 9 that will allow me to insert users with empty attributes?
