Difficulty Installing Dell P713 Printer

I am attempting to install a Dell P713 printer on my Ubuntu desktop.

I downloaded drivers from here. The installation initially failed due to an issue with the control file, but I was able to get it install by following the instructions in this article.

However, when I tried printing a test page, I received an error. The printer's state is Idle - Rendering Complete. The "Diagnostic Output" is as follows:

I am just not sure what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

Reinstall the driver once again.

:)

I gave it a try; no success unfortunately. Same error - "filter failed". Thanks.

pls state your country you live in and the default paper type.

I am guessing corvette is US car but that does not mean you live in the US which uses letter as the default.

Most other places use A4

if you are unsure you have set up your local environment correctly post the output for this command pls

Code:

locale
---the printer system relies on locale and you have us...so if that is wrong other things can go wrong.

AwesomeMachine 07-20-2017 08:20 PM

Filter failed is a bug in the cups-filters package. Try adjusting the output resolution.

Please excuse my ignorance, but how do I do that? Is it a setting in CUPS or something I would change on the printer itself? Thanks. :)

AwesomeMachine 07-21-2017 12:16 AM

If you launch system-config-printer, you can adjust the output resolution. Or, you can adjust it in the print dialog box from whatever app you're using. You should also report this as a bug.

Thank you so much for your help. Unfortunately, I encountered another roadblock. If I am looking at the right option (Printer Properties - Job Options - Printer Resolution), the only option is 300 x 300 dpi; there is no way to change this from the menu. I did look inside my PPD file for the Dell, and noticed that the Resolution was set to 600 x 600 for some of the options. I change this to 300 x 300, but no success. Are there any other options? Is it possible that another versions of CUPS might work?

EDIT: Also, whenever I add the printer, there is more than one option available. Specifically, I have one that says Dell Network Backend 1 and another that simply says Dell P713w. The latter has two 'Connection' options. One is AppSocket/JetDirect network printer via DNS-D, and the other is AppSocket/HP Jet Direct. Which is the correct choice?

AwesomeMachine 07-21-2017 06:42 PM

Is it a network printer or is it connected via USB?

Right now, I am attempting to run it as a network printer through Wi-Fi, but I am certainly willing to use it as a USB printer if that will make it easier to set-up. I tried it earlier, but without success.

Thanks.

Put the printer on a small linux server (Raspberry PI), and reach that server (linked to your home server) via wifi?
Perhaps a direct wifi is the origin? (I never tried direct wifi to my printer but connected the "wifi" compatible printer via USB to the raspberry PI server (which is used as scanner server too).

Use gutenprint?

Thanks. Unfortunately, I do not really have a way to put it on a small server. I just went ahead and plugged it in via USB, but still received the same error (Filter failed).

I tried installing gutenprint, but it did not seem to make any difference. Perhaps I am not using it correctly. From reading the gutenprint manual, it seems as if it should pretty much automatically integrate with CUPS, but I could certainly be wrong.

Could I possibly be adding the printer in the wrong way? Should I add through the CUPS interface or "system-config-printer" interface? I actually have tried both ways, but with no success.

Thanks so much.

EDIT: It really appears as if I am not going to get these Dell drivers to work. My question is, is there any way one of the "Generic" drivers would work? If so, how would I go about choosing the right one one? For example, Generic PCL 4, Generic PCL 5, Generic PDF, Generic GDI, etc. Thanks.

Corvette 07-24-2017 06:57 PM

I finally got it working. In case it helps anyone else, I will share what I had to do.

I discovered that the Dell P713's Lexmark "twin" is the S405.

I downloaded the drivers from Lexmark.

Then I encountered a problem with an "insecure filter"; I had to modify permissions as noted here..

Next, I had issue where the printer simply said "Processing" or something similar; I had to use the Network "back-end" option rather than the local USB option.

Thanks for all the replies.
